King vs. California King vs. Split King: Which Mattress Size is Right for You?

What is the Difference between King vs. California King vs. Split King?

Choosing the right mattress size can be stressful as you balance comfort and space, but is especially true when it comes to King, California King, and Split King beds. Despite similar names, each bed is different and if you’re upgrading your sleep space, it’s important to know how these sizes compare, how they would fit in your bedroom, and what bedding you’ll need to make the most of the mattress.

Why Mattress Size Matters

Selecting the right mattress size impacts your sleep quality, comfort, and overall bedroom aesthetics. A mattress that's too small can lead to restless nights, while one that's too large can overwhelm your space. Consider these factors when choosing between a King, California King, or Split King:

  • Bedroom Size: Ensure the mattress fits comfortably in your room, leaving enough space for movement and other furniture.

  • Sleeping Habits: Do you sleep alone or with a partner? Do you toss and turn or prefer to stretch out?

  • Height: Taller individuals may benefit from the extra length of a California King.

  • Sleep Preferences: Do you and your partner have different firmness or position preferences? A Split King can better accommodate individual needs.

King Bed Size (76” x 80”)

A King mattress is one of the most popular choices for couples who want extra space to stretch out. Measuring 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, it's the equivalent of two Twin XL mattresses side by side. This makes it great for master bedrooms that are at least 12x12 feet in size.

Bedding Considerations for King Size Bed:

  • Fitted Sheet, Flat Sheet and Blanket Size: Standard King (76” x 80”)

    • Depending on mattress height, most King sized fitted sheets can be used, with standard mattress heights between 8" to 11". For taller mattresses (12" to 18"), look for "deep pocket" sheets. For example, Evercool®+ Cooling Fitted Sheets are designed to accommodate mattresses up to 18" deep.

  • Pillows and Pillowcases Size: King (36" x 20")

    • Most pillows are readily available in two sizes, Standard (26" x 20") and King (36" x 20"). Choosing a King size pillow provides more coverage across the bed when sleeping due to the wider mattress size.

California King Bed Size (72” x 84”)

A California King is slightly narrower than a standard King but 4 inches longer, making it ideal for taller sleepers. Cali King's are best suited for rooms at least 12x12 feet or longer spaces where the extra legroom can be accommodated.

Bedding Considerations for California King Size Bed:

  • Fitted Sheet, Flat Sheet and Blanket Size: California King (72” x 84”)

    • Depending on mattress height, most California King sized fitted sheets can be used, with standard mattress heights between 8" to 11". For taller mattresses (12" to 18"), look for "deep pocket" sheets. For example, Evercool®+ Cooling Fitted Sheets are designed to accommodate mattresses up to 18" deep.

  • Pillows and Pillowcases Size: King (36" x 20")

    • Though slightly less wide compared to a King bed, Cali King beds can still use King size pillows. Alternatively, Queen size pillows can be an option, though it will cover less of the bed.

Split King Bed Size (Two Twin XLs – 38” x 80” each)

A Split King is essentially two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side, making it a great option for couples with different sleep preferences. Many adjustable bed frames are designed for Split Kings, allowing each sleeper to customize their side further.

Bedding Considerations for Split King Size Beds:

Since Split King configurations are comprised of two separate mattresses, couples can personalize their bedding arrangement for individual sleep.

  • Fitted Sheets: Two Twin XL fitted sheets (38” x 80” each) or one King size (76" x 80") fitted sheet.

  • Flat Sheets: Two Twin XL flat sheets or one King-size flat sheet

  • Blankets Size: Two Twin or Twin XL blankets or one King size blanket

    • For sleepers who have differing temperature preferences, the Scandinvian sleep method is an approach for couples to have separate covers rather than sharing one. This reduces disturbances by tugging or body temperature differences to get better, uninterrupted sleep.

  • Pillows and Pillowcases Size: King (36" x 20")

    • Most pillows are readily available in two sizes, Standard (26" x 20") and King (36" x 20"). Choosing a King size pillow provides more coverage across the bed when sleeping due to the wider mattress size.
