Down vs Feather? Goose vs Duck? Down Explained

Choosing the right duvet can greatly impact the quality of your sleep. We receive many questions about the filling of our duvets. What is down? What is feather? What is the difference between goose down and duck down? What is fill power?

Down and feather come from the same place - either a duck or a goose. Feathers are what we are most familiar with - the outer layer of bird that are hard stiff quills. Down fibres are beneath the protective feather covering that is used for insulation and look similar to that of a dandelion flower - light and fluffy. For this reason, pure down is considered to be one of the best fillings.

Duck vs Goose Down

In general, ducks are typically smaller than geese. The down fibres that come from duck tend to be smaller and the clusters while soft are not as fluffy geese down. Rest Original Duvet is filled with 100% duck down with UltraClean 700+ Fill Power. The larger clusters produced from geese down is considered to be the more premium of the two types. Rest Premium Duvet, filled with 100% goose down has 800 Fill Power.

What is Fill?

Fill power or "loft" is how the quality and size of down clusters are defined. The larger the down cluster, the higher the fill power rating, which is the number of cubic inches one ounce of down will fill under specific laboratory testing conditions.

When it comes down to choosing your duvet, we believe that you should have options that best fit your comfort level. That is why we offer our Rest family two types of duvets with various levels of warmth.

Along with the extra high fill power, Rest Down Duvets uses fills that are pre-washed and rinsed over 15 cycles with our UltraClean process to give you the fluffiest, cleanest and odor-free cloud-like sleeping experience.
